Every year, November is a bit of a magical time for some writers. Through Nanowrimo they band together in an inclusive and encouraging community, they set lofty goals, and they make writing a priority. Words are written and both small and big successes are celebrated.
Nanowrimo is a special time.
I’ve participated in Nanowrimo for several years now, both writing first drafts and as a “Nano rebel” doing revision work. I have grown as a writer and met new friends.
Nanowrimo will look a little different this year- there will be no in-person events- but the core community and challenge is unchanged. The online forums, badges, wordcount trackers, and writing sprints will be there.
Will you be there?
It’s been a weird year and maybe you’re looking for an outlet and a way to get your writing back on track, in which case sign up for Nanowrimo and let’s go!
Maybe you’re not so sure it would be the healthiest of times for you to be pushing yourself like that. You may be juggling a lot on your plate, and I get that. Take care of yourself.
Honestly, I’m so torn. I love Nanowrimo. I love its big goals and its positive energy and that even just trying is celebrated. And I love that it pushes me towards being a better writer and getting things done.
But I also have a lot going on these days and my emotional buffer is worn thin. I’ve been taking things slow, plugging away at my writing a few pages at a time, while reminding myself to rest and practice self-care.
I don’t know if big goals are good for me right now.
Regardless of whether I sign up officially, I know I’ll be writing in November one way or another.
I want to carry on the spirit of enthusiasm that Nanowrimo brings. And I want to celebrate every win and encourage everyone around me who is trying hard things.
I want to practice self-care but I also want to push myself.
What will November look like for you?
If you’re doing Nanowrimo, I would love to hear about it and cheer you on! You can do this!

And if you’re taking things a bit slower these days, know that you are not alone. Don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishments as well, both big and small. <3
Happy writing to you this coming November! 🙂
