Fall is solidly here and I’m hearing about all these amazing things that the kids are learning at school. They’re learning new reading and writing strategies, what different dinosaurs ate, taking Chinese language classes, practicing deep breathing and conflict resolution, and figuring out word problems in math.
And I’m just so impressed! Gosh, when was the last time I learned some of that stuff? When have I learned about new animals, reviewed some history, or practiced a new meditation strategy?
In the interests of broadening our horizons, let’s try some new things today. Even just brushing the surface of a topic we may not think of frequently can enrich our lives and help our minds be a little more flexible.
And, of course, continuing to feed our minds can help our creativity grow and flourish!
So pick something off this list, come up with your own ideas, or do them all!
And let’s see where it takes us 🙂
New Things Challenge:
- Listen to music in a genre you’re not familiar with
(pro tip: searching “best of _________” ie: jazz, country, gospel, etc is usually a good place to start) - Read the featured articles of the day on Wikipedia
- Go to your local library and ask for a book recommendation
- Read nonfiction children’s books about animals, places, or history you’re interested in
- Watch a documentary or podcast
- Try cooking something new
(here are some of my favorite recipes if you’re looking for ideas!) - Practice your geography with a game or by checking out some maps
- Try your hand at some beginner coding at code.org
(I recommend trying their dance party project) - Learn how to say hello in a new language
(Duolingo is a great resource for languages)
For some creative prompts…
- Try writing something in a new genre: horror, mystery, comedy, children’s, fantasy… there are many to choose from!
(remember, it doesn’t need to be good, we’re just playing here!) - Write 1,000 words using a writing prompt
- Write some poetry or a song
- Paint, doodle, or collage something
We may not be “great” at any of the things we try but that’s not the point! We’re learning and absorbing new things. These habits of curiosity and experimentation help us grow and these experiences will enrich our lives and our art.
What will you try today?
PS: For any of you looking to take on a writing challenge, don’t forget that Nanowrimo starts in a few days! Check it out, feel free to add me as a buddy (BethyRose), and good luck! 🙂
