Songwriting for Authors

Ever wish you could write a song? Ever hear a song on the radio and think “I could do better”?

I’m here today to ask you- why not? Why not give it a go?

There is a lot we can learn from music as writers: it helps us think differently about words and rhythm. It’s good practice conveying emotion and description in new ways.

Songwriting is a form of storytelling.

It is form of poetry.

All of these things can make us better writers.

As you may have guessed, I plan to do some songwriting soon!

I’m all signed up for February Album Writing Month (FAWM) where everyone is challenged to write 14 songs in a month (that comes out to one song every two days).

I first participated in FAWM last year. It’s basically a lot like NaNoWriMo, with an encouraging community and a challenge that pushes you to create.

While I don’t expect to create anything amazing (I’ll leave that to the professionals) I’m excited about messing around with words and being creative in a different format. I figure anything I create is a win!

And honestly, I’m looking forward to a change of pace from some of my novel revisions and “usual” tasks. It’s been a long year and having an outlet to just have fun, to create and not take things too seriously, sounds like the perfect plan.

Do I hope to write a song I like in there somewhere? That’d be nice!

But no matter how the month goes, I think it’s going to be a great experience to be flexing some creativity muscles in new ways.

I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂

Feel free to look me up on FAWM (bethyrose) if you want to join the fun!
